On October 24th of last year, I had a huge eye-opening event that happened to me while climbing into my tree-stand. Luckily, I was wearing a lineman’s rope and I turned out to be just fine, but it was enough to shock me a little bit and made me count my blessings a little more than normal.

Summer is right around the corner. Summer can mean many different things for deer hunters, and among them is that it seems to be a time of year a lot of people like to be out scouting for where to hang their treestands the upcoming year. Now, this isn’t a bad idea, and can actually work quite well if you will be hunting during the early season while a lot of the conditions are the same as the summer. But what if you won’t be hunting that area until say late October or November? In this type of situation, I feel as though you should be out in the timber right now, scouting, picking trees for stands, and if you can, actually hanging the stands now. Here’s why.

Hunting buck bedding areas has become one of the most popular techniques when it comes to hunting mature bucks over the last couple of years, thanks in large part to Dan Infalt and “The Hunting Beast” Forum. Being that it is a high risk, high reward type of style, it can be a tricky way to hunt, but it can really pay off if you want that consistent success. Sometimes sitting just outside a whitetails safe-zone and being a bit more aggressive is what it takes, especially when hunting public land.

Back in November, I received a text from a buddy saying how he had just messed up an opportunity at a buck because he was on his cell phone, and by the time he realized the buck was even in the area, it was too late. He couldn’t put his phone away, grab his bow and get drawn back before the buck was through all of his shooting lanes. This year up to this point, shed hunting here in northern Minnesota has been pretty much stagnant as we still have a ton of snow outside. Just recently though, as of last week, the temperatures have started to rise and the snow levels are starting to drop. I’m hoping that by the end of this week, it will get to the point where I will start having better chances of actually finding antlers when I’m out looking. I absolutely love shed hunting. There’s simply no question about it. As I’ve thought of it though recently, I’ve begun to wonder if my passion for shed hunting becomes a detriment to my hunting success. It’s not what I believe, but this is more of an observation and it generated a question that I wanted to talk through in this blog post to get you thinking. I know some absolute killers that shed hunt seemingly everyday in the spring, but I also know some great deer hunters that think shed hunting, specifically, can be a waste of time. So, who’s right? Here in my home state of Minnesota, there’s still feet of snow out in the woods. In fact, where I live has seen record amounts of snowfall in February, with over 30 inches of accumulation over the duration of the month. So, you could say my scouting hasn’t been too intense yet. But, if accessing the woods is a little easier for you, and your neck of the woods doesn’t represent the North Pole, then by all means you should be out scouting for whitetails right now. It’s mid to late January. You can’t go sit in the stand anymore because deer season is over. But you still want to be out doing something related to deer. This time of year, deer enthusiasts across the country start hitting the timber in search of something else and that’s shed antlers. Shed hunting is something a lot of us look forward to doing every winter/spring, but when should you start? You don’t want to be out there too late. Things happen such as rodents getting a hold of them, or maybe others shed hunting on the property you do first. But in the same breath, you don’t want to start too early either. The last thing you want to do is push deer out of an area before they shed and then subsequently not have any antlers to look for. So when do you start? Here’s what I do.
