It’s mid to late January. You can’t go sit in the stand anymore because deer season is over. But you still want to be out doing something related to deer. This time of year, deer enthusiasts across the country start hitting the timber in search of something else and that’s shed antlers. Shed hunting is something a lot of us look forward to doing every winter/spring, but when should you start? You don’t want to be out there too late. Things happen such as rodents getting a hold of them, or maybe others shed hunting on the property you do first. But in the same breath, you don’t want to start too early either. The last thing you want to do is push deer out of an area before they shed and then subsequently not have any antlers to look for. So when do you start? Here’s what I do.

Across much of the country, deer season will be coming to close within the next few days to few weeks. All of the states I hunt will be closing after the first week of January other than Wisconsin (Jan. 31). As we come down to crunch time, you can still fill a tag, but will more than likely have to give it your all. Here are three last minute tactics you can try to fill your buzzer beater tag.

December. As a bowhunter, what goes through your mind when you think of December? I know for me personally, I get quite excited. There is still so much hunting in front of us, yet I feel as though many people look over late season bowhunting in December and January for many reasons. What you have to remember though, is that even though yes it can be cold, snowy, and miserable, the late season can provide not only great, but really fun hunting too. Often times, by this juncture of the season it can be easy to start getting "worn out" from the rut. It seems counterintuitive given the fact that most whitetail hunters look forward to the rut all year, but after a few all day sits early in the month, it can take a lot of energy out of a person. If you haven't been successful yet hunting the rut this year, don't worry, because some of the best hunting could still be ahead of you. One of the best deer hunters out there, Don Higgins, has a great track record harvesting bucks during the back half of the rut, and below you can read about how he hunts this time of the year.

There are certain weather conditions that just seem to scream “Go Hunting!”. A cold front passes through, everyone knows to be in a tree. High pressure days, I’d say most people agree that movement could be better than normal. But one weather condition that I don’t think enough people take advantage of is precipitation. Rain can be a great weather condition to hunt in if you can withstand being “miserable”. There are a few reasons that rain can present unique advantages to hunting, and below I’ll cover those, along with when to not hunt in the rain.
