I asked them if they were hunting new places, or areas that they've hunted in the past. When they answered the latter, the answer was simple. When was the rut rocking last year? How about the year before?

Over the course of 365 days, there are so many things that go into putting yourself in the position to be at full draw on a mature whitetail buck. But all of it can seemingly go to waste in a split second during the moment of truth if you aren’t able to seal the deal. From what I’ve seen and through talking to a lot of people that have consistently put down mature bucks, it seems to be there are people out there who seem to always get it done in that moment of truth, and there are some who simply struggle in the moment. You could be the best deer hunter in the world, but through a series of split seconds, it could define what you end up killing and what you wish you could have back.

The October lull and nocturnal bucks. Two terms deer hunters like to use a lot during this time of the year to blame their hunting woes on. But what if neither of those existed? Like in the way you might think them to exist. There's something to be said for reduced deer movement in early October, but that doesn't mean you can't still be in the game when it comes to hunting mature bucks. This summer I was thinking about how at times I love to hunt by myself, and other times I will hunt with a friend. Some people only hunt with others, whether they simply like sitting together for the company, or maybe they film together. Others will only hunt solo, never wanting to sit with others, no matter how good of friends. This summer, I posted about this topic on social media to gather thoughts from others, and wanted to share them below. After you read through what a few other people think, and why they do what they do, I'll offer up my complete thoughts.

Have you ever hunted a buck that seemed to be everywhere all of the time, but you just couldn't catch up to him? Last year I hunted a buck I had called Kobe, and had thousands upon thousands of trail camera photos, not to mention encounters as well, but I could never get him in bow range, even though I thought I had him pattered to a T. It raised a question that I wanted to address in this blog post today. Can mature bucks pattern us just as we can pattern them? Below are my thoughts.

Early season hunting can be a very interesting time to be chasing mature bucks. Things can be changing in a hurry with crops coming out and food sources changing seemingly with the snap of a finger. Bucks have shed their velvet now, and a lot of them are shifting their home ranges. You need to be on top on your game and be ready to change on the fly if you want to put yourself in the best position possible to wrap your tag around a buck this time of the year.

If I had to guess, I'd venture to say that probably most deer hunters would like to harvest mature bucks on a yearly basis or as close to a yearly basis as possible. Yet, when you get down to it, not many hunters actually do this. The are a multitude of reasons, but in this blog post, I'm going to go over three rules that if you have, and stay true to, will no doubt help you tag more mature bucks. The real question is, are you willing to commit to them?

Do you know what my wall would look like had I harvested every mature buck I've gotten trail camera pictures of? I wouldn't have any room for more bucks. Or even if I had harvested every mature buck that I've gotten over 100 pictures of...that would still be a long list! The point I'm trying to get across here is that getting pictures of a mature buck and harvesting him are two things that can be worlds apart. I think to some hunters, this point is obvious, but to some, it might be a helpful reminder that there can still be a long way to go to harvesting a buck even after capturing many photos of him. The challenge is how do you go from pictures to a blood trail?
