Late season hunting can mean many things. Among them is the nature of deer season coming to an end. Pressure seemingly mounts, and it can be easy to ask yourself if you’ll score a buzzer beater buck or not. Something I feel as though a lot of people need to ask themselves is what is your goal when it comes to hunting? If you are hunting for mature bucks, then you simply cannot be afraid of tag soup. Here’s why.

December. As a bowhunter, what goes through your mind when you think of December? I know for me personally, I get quite excited. There is still so much hunting in front of us, yet I feel as though many people look over late season bowhunting in December and January for many reasons. What you have to remember though, is that even though yes it can be cold, snowy, and miserable, the late season can provide not only great, but really fun hunting too. Hunting the rut can be an absolute marathon. If you have yet to fill a tag during this year’s rut, don’t worry, because it’s not over yet! There’s still plenty of good rut hunting to be had, but you may have to change how your hunting to be successful. Often times, by this juncture of the season it can be easy to start getting "worn out" from the rut. It seems counterintuitive given the fact that most whitetail hunters look forward to the rut all year, but after a few all day sits early in the month, it can take a lot of energy out of a person. If you haven't been successful yet hunting the rut this year, don't worry, because some of the best hunting could still be ahead of you. There are certain weather conditions that just seem to scream “Go Hunting!”. A cold front passes through, everyone knows to be in a tree. High pressure days, I’d say most people agree that movement could be better than normal. But one weather condition that I don’t think enough people take advantage of is precipitation. Rain can be a great weather condition to hunt in if you can withstand being “miserable”. There are a few reasons that rain can present unique advantages to hunting, and below I’ll cover those, along with when to not hunt in the rain.

There are so many ways to send an arrow through a mature buck during the rut. There are also a lot of ways to fall into a rut of your own that can hinder your success. One of those ways that are easy to fall into a rut is with treestand placement. I’ve talked about it periodically over the years, but it’s easy to hang a stand and then hunt it over and over again, maybe even year after year. Sure, every once and awhile you’ll find that magic spot where it seems like you have a chance at a mature buck out of it every year, but that is few and far between. Today, I wanted to touch on how running and gunning can be a successful strategy, and specifically why during the rut it can be particularly effective.

Hunting the rut can be a different experience largely depending on where you are spending time chasing bucks. For instance, you will hunt completely different if you are in Iowa compared to the mountainous range of Pennsylvania. Speaking of Pennsylvania, I wanted to get an idea of what it might be like to hunt mountain bucks on the east coast, and today we've got a great Q&A with Beau Martonik from East meets West on all things mountain buck hunting during the rut. I've had a few people ask me recently what days I'd recommend they take off of work in the next month to hunt the rut. I asked them if they were hunting new places, or areas that they've hunted in the past. When they answered the latter, the answer was simple. When was the rut rocking last year? How about the year before?

Over the course of 365 days, there are so many things that go into putting yourself in the position to be at full draw on a mature whitetail buck. But all of it can seemingly go to waste in a split second during the moment of truth if you aren’t able to seal the deal. From what I’ve seen and through talking to a lot of people that have consistently put down mature bucks, it seems to be there are people out there who seem to always get it done in that moment of truth, and there are some who simply struggle in the moment. You could be the best deer hunter in the world, but through a series of split seconds, it could define what you end up killing and what you wish you could have back.
